Shawnee Real Bird
Photographer & Writer
“Shawnee Real Bird, known by her Apsáalooke ancestors as Horse Across Way, is an Indigenous poet and photographer. Her roots are the deepest on her home reservation on the Crow (Apsáalooke) Nation, in Southern Montana. Shawnee is not only a storyteller but the first pilot from her tribe and the first woman from the northern plains tribal regions to achieve her level of licensing. Being able to see the sky from the same perspective her ancestors sought out visions of, reflects in both her photography and poetry. Each piece she creates is a multimedia perspective of her experience in modern society as an indigenous person influenced by ancestors and traditions.”
